Lumarca is an open-source, highly scalable, low-cost volumetric display — no glasses required.

While working on a different project at the Eyebeam Art and Technology space, I was introduced to the Lumarca creators, Albert Hwang and Matt Parker. We decided to collaborate on a DIY prototype that could be sold so that anyone could have a volumetric display of their own.

I designed the home version of Lumarca as a parametric model in Grasshopper which allowed me to fine tune every aspect as we worked out the details of fabrication and presentation. Every piece is slip-locked together from laser-cut chipboard without any need for additional parts or adhesive. As the pieces slip together it becomes a structurally stable platform for 3D holographic art.
